Bipolar disorder in Genetics

Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder which is sensitivity of human is very unstable, thus feeling changes rapidly. Finally, it causes that destroying relationship, hard to live in society and sometimes the suicide (NIMH, 2008). But many people think bipolar disorder comes from the stress or shocking to the mental. It is true, however, surprisingly, most bipolar disorder comes from the previous generation i.e. a heritage. How come this disorder can occur as a heritage and how can be bipolar disorder treated?

  Burmeister (1994) insisted that 72 percent of children who have a bipolar disorder are got by their ascendants which had a bipolar disorder. Also their chromosomes which have a bipolar disorder are same that means descendants inherit DNA which has a bipolar disorder from their ascendants. Specifically, chromosome 4p16, 12q23-q24, 16p13, 21q22 and Xq24-q26 have a bipolar disorder which genes are more complicated than normal genes (Craddock and Jones, 2001). Therefore, it can be a reason that bipolar disorder can occur as a heritage.

However, developing science, bipolar disorder can be treated but not perfectly. Usually, it is treated using by lithium. Martin (2011) states that lithium act in central nervous system (CNS) and it helps to reduce the interval of a bipolar disorder occurred. How? Generally, CNS controls in nerve system and impulse moves in neurons. The impulse is converted to neurotransmitters and these move between neurons as synapses. Especially, glutamate which is a kind of neurotransmitters acts in neurons to stabilize feeling or mental of people. But patient’s glutamate which has a bipolar disorder is not moved or moved too many to the other synapses. Lithium can make a balance of glutamate to move between neurons.

In conclusion, bipolar disorder is related to genetics and it can be treated by lithium as a medication. Bipolar disorder is a mental problem which can be caused many social problems, finally suicide. Also bipolar disorder may give a next generation as a heritage because it is a problem of chromosomes. However, it can be treated by lithium, but partly. Lithium can help to move neurotransmitters, especially glutamate, in neurons. I expect that studying in genetics is developing more and more. Therefore, bipolar disorder can be treated perfectly.
