Resurrecting prehistoric mammoth by applying DNA clone technology

I choose this topic mainly because I am inspired by a piece of sensational news that posted not long ago in the internet, “on 13th of March, researchers from South Korean and Russian have signed the corporation agreement together about planning to use clone technology to revive prehistoric mammoth”( 6park, 2012). This year July, Russian researchers found a piece of frozen leg bone under permafrost in Siberia. Same year on November, they cut open the leg bone and discovered the marrow in the bone still frozen and reserved very well. Russian scientists were going to transfer the mammoth leg bone tissue sample to south Korean and south Korean scientists need to extract the cell from bone marrow and recovered the cell first as part of the cell already damaged due to the long term frostbite effect.
This is how they are going to do it. After scientists have revived the cell from the leg bone marrow sample, then they will take an egg cell from an Indian elephant, and remove the cell’s nucleus, which is the part that store most of the cell’s genetic material, known as DNA. This will be replaced by a nucleus taken from the mammoth’s bone marrow cell, effectively creating a fertilized egg. Afterwards the fertilized egg will be cultured and develop into an embryo. Then the embryo will be injected to Indian elephant’s body. Under the process of 22months natural pregnancy, the Indian elephant will be ready to give birth to a baby mammoth. The reason why choosing Indian elephant to do this experiment was that Indian elephant is close relative to ancient mammoth. In this whole complex process of revival of the mammoth, not only DNA clone technology is involved, also the nucleus transplantation technology will be used.
In conclusion, with the significant development of DNA technology, the clone of ancient mammoth will implement not long in the future. A dream that it used to be impossible in the past will not be the case anymore. If this project succeeds, the ancient mammoth will reappear in the world so that we can study them closely. For instance, DNA technology can be applied in various ways different areas to produce different outcome which is beneficial to human beings. Therefore, the development of DNA technology is influencing our life in a better way.
